PETERBOROUGH — About 30 people gathered at the Peterborough Town Library for a meet and greet pizza lunch with Democratic presidential hopeful and Maryland Congressman John Delaney.

The event was held by the chairman of the New Hampshire Chapter of the High School Democrats, Dublin School student Owen Mortner.

Sunday was Delaney’s seventh trip to the Granite State. So far he is the only Democrat to announce his candidacy.

“A lot of people are running, but they are just not being honest about it,” Delaney said.

Delaney said he flew in Sunday morning and started his day meeting with a small group of voters before the library event. After the event wrapped up Delaney headed to Keene for a house party.

Delaney said he wants people to get to know him now while the field it clear.

“I think I am the right person. I have the right vision, but not enough people know me so I’m going to solve that problem by jumping in early,” Delaney said.

“I want to bring the country together and focus on the future. We’re not preparing our country for the future and we’re terribly divided.”

Delaney said he enjoyed the event and fielding questions ranging from Medicare, Medicaid, the role of the U. S in the world and the minimum wage.

“Not surprisingly people in New Hampshire are really well informed and ask really substantive questions,” he said.

Voters at the events said they were there to meet Delaney and learn more about his position, but are far from picking a candidate this early in the race.

Heather Stockwell of Dublin said while it’s too soon for her to pick a candidate, she enjoyed being able to ask Delaney questions about his positions in the close intimate setting at the library Sunday afternoon.

“It’s still really too early for me to be, ‘Hey, yeah, vote for him.’ But it was really refreshing to hear some of his ideas and I’m looking forward to hear more from him,” Stockwell said.

“What I really liked about John was the fact that he wants to bring back this idea of the American Dream and civility and our stature globally — those are all things that Americans are struggling with right now as we move forward into the future and that whole ‘focus on the future,’ I can totally see that on one of his campaign signs. We’re going to focus on the future. It’s what we really need to be doing.”

Jill Shaffer Hammond of Peterborough said as a former state representative she is focused on the state elections coming up in November, but said talking to Delaney gives her hope for the future of politicians on the federal level.

“We’ve got so many problems at the state level that’s where my focus is,” she said, adding, “He gives me hope for the federal level.”
