WASHINGTON — The nation’s largest financial resource for socially liberal women in politics is endorsing Democratic congressional candidate Maura Sullivan of Portsmouth in the crowded, 1st District primary.
Leaders with EMILY’s List said Sullivan stands out as a “fierce advocate” as a Marine and Iraq War veteran and member of the Obama administration.
“Maura Sullivan is a fierce advocate for working families who never backs down from a tough fight,” EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement. “She has dedicated her career to serving our country, first as a Marine and then as an appointee in the Obama administration.”
EMILY’s List has raised more than $500 million in donations to women candidates who support abortion rights.
Sullivan is one of eight Democrats seeking her party’s nomination to replace Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H. who is not seeking reelection.
“This is a perennial swing seat that’s open in a deep purple district,” Schriock said. “Maura has what it takes to take on the GOP and win in November at a time when the stakes for working families couldn’t be higher. Maura is a champion for working families and has the full support of the EMILY’s List community to fight for Granite Staters in Congress.”
Sullivan has taken an early lead in fundraising over her primary challengers with Executive Councilor Chris Pappas, D-Manchester, the only primary rival who raised at least half of the $435,000 Sullivan has taken in so far.
Her critics have charged Sullivan with shopping for a congressional seat, moving to the state with her family only last summer after Democratic leaders had been promoting her as a candidate to run for a U.S. House from her home state of Illinois.
