MEREDITH -- Fish and Game officers were called to respond to a report of a vehicle through the ice in the area of Stonedam Island on Lake Winnipesaukee Sunday evening.

A caller from Gilford reported seeing a black Jeep break through the ice, but was unsure whether there was anyone inside at the time. Shortly after 6 p.m., a vehicle was located and Fish and Game called for an underwater camera.

Fish and Game officials said they later received a call from the driver of the Jeep saying he had taken shelter at a nearby home.

The island, which is owned by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, is located at the east end of Meredith Bay, southeast of Meredith Neck and northwest of Governor's Island.

Meredith police and firefighters and members of the Laconia Fire Department assisted at the scene, staging at Hubbard Road and Lighthouse Point Road.
