MOULTONBOROUGH — Officials say a body was found in the basement of a home destroyed by fire on Black’s Landing Road early Monday in Moultonborough.

Moultonborough firefighters were called to 96 Black’s Landing Road at 3:42 a.m. Monday to investigate reports of a house fire. A neighbor called 911 after spotting the flames. Upon arrival fire crews reported a fully-involved structure fire.

Once the fire was knocked down, personnel with the state Fire Marshal’s Office found a body in the basement of the heavily-damaged home, which was deemed a complete loss. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to positively identify the deceased individual. No further information about the victim was available Monday.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office is working with Moultonborough Fire Chief David Bengtson and Police Chief Leonard j. Wetherbee Jr. to determine the cause of the blaze.

Anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to contact Investigator Matthew Wilmot of the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 223-4289.
