SALEM — A female motorist did not appear to have injuries after her vehicle was forced off the highway near Exit 1 on Interstate 93 and rolled over multiple times into the median between the northbound and southbound sections of the highway, according to Salem Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Kenney.
Kenney said the driver was heading south when she swerved to avoid a ladder that fell off a work van in front of her. The accident was called in at 4:34 p.m. and first responders arrived two minutes later.
The driver, who was wearing her seatbelt, was able to remove herself from the vehicle and walk to the highway with the help of some bystanders, Kenney said. She got out of the vehicle before a fire started in the car’s engine compartment.
“The car was on fire when we got there,” Kenney said.
The fire department quickly extinguished the fire and the patient was transported to Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital for evaluation. Kenney said she seemed mostly free of injury and able to walk.
The driver of the work van noticed what happened and stopped. Kenney said State Police were speaking with the work van operator.
Kenney said the vehicle that rolled over was so “beat up” he couldn’t identify the make or model.
