MERRIMACK - A chimney fire at the historic Homestead Restaurant cleared the eatery during lunch hour Saturday but a quick response allowed the business to reopen by 2 p.m., officials said.

Emergency workers were called to the Daniel Webster Highway restaurant about noon.

The building was being evacuated when firefighters arrived, and employees told emergency workers they saw flames coming down the chimney into the restaurant.

Fire Chief Michael Currier said his crews used a ladder truck to extinguish the fire before it spread beyond the chimney and fireplace.

There were no injuries. The scene was cleared by 1:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
