THORNTON — Four lost hikers attending Harvard University were located Saturday night unharmed and without flashlights, authorities said.
Fish and Game officials were notified about 9:30 p.m. about some lost hikers on the Welch Dickey Trail in Waterville Valley. Officers made phone contact with the hikers and learned they had no flashlights and couldn’t follow the trail, authorities said.
Fish and Game officers as well as personnel from the Waterville Police and Fire, and Thornton Police went to the trail and located the four hikers a short way off the Dickey trail around 11 p.m., according to Fish and Game.
The hikers were identified as 27-year-old Qiuying Sun, 26-year-old Zhuang Guo, 24-year-old Xia Yan and 25-year-old Lubin Liu, authorities said. All four are Harvard students from China who started hiking at around 5 p.m. and had planned to hike the Welch Dickey loop but did not realize how long it would take.
They didn’t plan to hike after dark and had no lights or maps, so they called 911, authorities said.
Searchers used GPS coordinates generated from the 911 call to locate the hikers. Nobody in the hiking party was injured, and the hikers were given lights and escorted to the trailhead.
