WINCHESTER - Winchester police officials said an autopsy was performed Friday afternoon on the body of a motorist found inside a burning car on Route 10 early Thursday morning.

The body was so badly burned that officials could not tell whether it was a male or female victim.

Winchester police and fire departments responded to the scene of a burning car at about 3 a.m.

The accident was about 1½ miles north of the Massachusetts state line, officials said.

Following an investigation, police officials said they believe the driver was going north on Route 10, also known as Manning Hill Road, when it left the road, struck a tree and spun around to face south on the northbound shoulder of the road.

State fire officials have said they believe the crash caused the fire.

A large section of Route 10 was closed to traffic Thursday morning until 8:15 a.m.

Winchester police officials said they will not release any more details until the victim has been identified and family have been notified.
