FRANCONIA NOTCH - A section of Interstate 93 through Franconia Notch was closed in both directions Monday afternoon after high winds blew three tractor trailers over, causing one to land on a State Police cruiser with a trooper inside, authorities said.

State Police Capt. Chris Vetter said the trooper was in the breakdown lane when the truck blew over and the trailer came to to rest on the side of the cruiser.

Neither the trooper nor the truck driver was injured, Vetter said.

The cruiser was damaged.

“This just goes to show you the dangers that law enforcement deal with on a daily basis, even from Mother Nature,” Vetter said.

The fierce winds blew two other tractor trailers over, he said.

“My understanding is there were no injuries at all,” Vetter said.

The highway remained closed through the notch at 4:30 p.m. Vetter said he wasn't sure how long it would remain closed.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory until 8 p.m. for wind gusts up to 50 mph.
