Body recovered off Maine coast

August 10. 2017 11:34PM

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — A body was recovered 15 nautical miles off the coast of Kennebunkport Thursday.

A lifeboat crew from Portsmouth Harbor responded to the scene and did the recovery.

“A good Samaritan contacted watch stand workers at Sector Northern New England about 11:15 a.m. and reported finding the body in the water,” said a new release issued by U.S. Coast Guard Ensign Chellsey Phillips. “A motor lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor, in New Hampshire, recovered the deceased body and transferred it to the New Hampshire coroner's office for positive identification.”

The Coast Guard said identification of the body is pending a review by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner's Office; in the meantime it is not releasing any information about the cause of death.

Coast Guard officials said they would not identify the body until they believed next-of-kin had been notified.
