MANCHESTER — Police investigators could be seen throughout the day Tuesday at the Howe Street apartment building where a 2-year-old boy was found dead Monday.
The Attorney General’s office said an autopsy was performed Tuesday. Senior Assistant Attorney General Susan Morrell, who is leading the state’s investigation, said the autopsy results would not be released until today.
Meanwhile, a Manchester Police Department crime van was parked across the street from 551 Howe St. Emergency medical personnel and police were first dispatched there Monday at 11:20 a.m. for a report of a boy in cardiac arrest in a third-floor apartment.
First responders found the boy unconscious. He was pronounced dead at Elliot Hospital a short time afterward.
Eric Landry said he lives in the first-floor apartment at 551 Howe.
He never heard loud arguing or sounds that would indicate fighting or abuse, he said.
“It’s always been relatively quiet. The only noise you hear is his (toy) Jeep running along the floor,” Landry said of the boy.
Landry and his ex-wife share custody of his three children, who he said would often play outside with the 2- and 4-year-old living in the third-floor apartment.
“In the relationship, the couple seemed to be very happy together from what I observed,” said Landry, who moved to the building in September after his divorce.
“Would I have let them watch my kids? Absolutely,” Landry said.
The building was eerily quiet Tuesday, even with the police presence, he said.
Late Monday, two police cruisers could be seen outside the residence as officers exited the apartment building carrying boxes and plastic bags.
Cheryl Randall, a Florida resident, said the deceased toddler — identified by a source close to the family as a child named Jacob — was her daughter’s nephew.
“He was a great kid, very warm and loving,” said Randall. “My daughter is having a very hard time with this. Everyone who knew him is devastated. His mother is very loving, just trying to do right by her kids. This is terrible.”
