The 3-year-old Manchester boy pulled from an indoor pool at a New Boston home died Monday night at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Mark and Andrea Howarth of 30 Foxberry Drive are the owners of the home where the tragedy took place Sunday evening. The Howarths said the day started with a Mother’s Day barbecue the couple hosted for about 50 members of their church, including Adriel Amorim and his family.
“It was such a beautiful day: Sunny, barbecuing, cooking. Something like this was the last thing you would expect,” Mark Howarth said Tuesday. “You have to wonder why. There was no alcohol, no cigarettes, no horseplay — you couldn’t get a group of people together being so good.
“The men cooking for the mothers, there were no arguments, and the kids were playing Christian music. It was like a fairy tale.”
Mark said that he had last seen Adriel in the living room surrounded by other party-goers about two hours before the boy was pulled from the water by his father just before 9 p.m., Adriano Amorim.
Howarth was in the home’s kitchen when he heard Adriel was found unresponsive in the Howarths’ indoor pool.
After the boy was out of the water, Adriano Amorim and Andrea Howarth took turns performing CPR until emergency responders arrived.
Andrea Howarth, who described herself as a close friend of the Amorim family, said that parents Adriano and Andreia have been seeking comfort in their faith since their son’s death. She said Adriel was a bright young boy.
“He spoke both English and Portuguese,” she said. “He was the cutest thing ever, and he called his daddy ‘my big friend.’”
Police said the boy was pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m. Monday at the Boston hospital. His official cause of death has not been released.
New Boston Police Chief James Brace said the incident remains under investigation.
Andrea Howarth has established a GoFundMe page to help the Amorims cover the cost of the boy’s funeral expenses. Those wishing to make a donation can do so at www.gofundme.com/andrea-howarth.
