DERRY — It’s been more than a week since 63-year-old John “Jack” Walsh walked away from Parkland Medical Center in Derry and police still have no verified sighting of him.
Walsh, a resident of Pleasant Valley Nursing Center, walked away from Parkland about 1 p.m. on Dec. 13. He was last seen walking south on Birch Street in Derry, heading for Windham.
Detectives have followed up on numerous reports of him being seen locally and as far away as Lowell and Methuen, Mass. Police said there is no known destination where he may be headed.
Investigators said, despite social media commentary, they have no credible sighting of Walsh.
Walsh has been known to go on long walks in the past and ended up in various parts of the state. On at least one occasion, he hitchhiked to Brattleboro, Vt.
A family member said Walsh suffers from dementia and mental illness.
Police have conducted an extensive search of the area surrounding Parkland and Birch Street businesses and wooded areas. Officers viewed surveillance tapes from local businesses to see if they could spot what direction Walsh was walking. A special K-9 team was brought in but the dog did not pick up Walsh’s scent.
Investigators said Walsh, having gone missing for so long, could have traveled a significant distance since then.
Walsh was last seen wearing a brown leather jacket, gray T-shirt and blue jeans. He is about six-feet tall and weighs about 139 pounds.
Anyone with information about Walsh’s whereabouts is asked to contact police at 603-432-6111. Investigators said it is not helpful to post information on social media as it delays their ability to properly respond to a possible sighting.
