SANBORNTON — The “large rumble” that area residents reported on social media Tuesday afternoon might have been the slight earthquake that federal officials documented near Sanbornton.

A seismograph from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program recorded a 1.9 magnitude quake roughly three miles northwest of Sanbornton.

According to one USGS analysis of the event, the tremor was first recorded at 4:41 p.m.

Small tremors occur periodically in northern New England, and in the past month there have been four recorded across New Hampshrie, Massachusetts and Maine, officials said.

Some residents reported on Facebook hearing what they thought was a minor explosion or a large rumble in the distance.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury resulting from the tremor.
