LACONIA — City voters have decided one Republican and one Democrat will advance to the general election in February for a House seat representing Belknap County District 3.
In a special state primary election held Tuesday, Republican Les Cartier and Democrat Philip Spagnuolo were the top vote-getters.
Just 175 of the 10,877 registered voters cast ballots. Cartier received 96 votes. Spagnuolo won 42 votes; Republican William Davies was just five votes behind, at 37.
The seat was left vacant by the death of Don Flanders, 82, a Laconia Republican who had served in the House since 2000.
Cartier is a retired hazardous materials coordinator for the state Fire Marshal’s office. Spagnuolo is a recovery coach at Navigating Recovery of the Lakes Region.
Belknap District 3 has four seats representing Laconia. The others are held by retired Judge David Huot, a Democrat, and Republicans Peter Spanos and Frank Tilton.
The general election is Feb. 27.
