DERRY — The New Hampshire Department of Transportation will seek bids next month to reconstruct an intersection that had 61 accidents in a 10-year period.

The intersection, in the northeast corner of town, currently has stop signs on English Range and Scobie Pond roads and a yellow blinking light above Bypass 28.

“I drive that road every single day. It is very common to see some kind of fender-bender at that intersection,” said Elizabeth Robidoux, Derry’s assistant town planner.

In 2016, the state conducted a traffic study of the intersection after it was flagged for having a high number of accidents.

Out of the 61 accidents between 2005 and 2014, 31 resulted in injury and three resulted in serious injury. In 2015, a 62-year-old woman died in a car accident at the intersection.

“Some of them were pretty severe,” said Michael Dugas, a DOT safety engineer.

Dugas said the new design will involve a widening of the bypass to include an extra lane on the northbound and southbound sides, a slight shifting of the side roads and a four-way traffic signal.

Bids for the project will be advertised by Sept. 11, Dugas said. He expects all bids to be submitted by October and the contract awarded over the winter.

The cost of the project carries an estimated $1.2 million price tag, but will be funded entirely by the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program.

Reconstruction of the intersection will take place next spring, but crews will soon begin preparations such as the relocation of utility poles.
