Mazda to take over former Planet Fitness space

Werner Mazda is set to move into the former Planet Fitness building on Huse Road in Manchester. The fitness center moved across the street.

MANCHESTER — Werner Mazda will move into the shuttered Planet Fitness building down the street.

The Planet Fitness closed its 736 Huse Road location in June to move across the street into Center View Plaza, the former site of a Lowe’s home improvement store that is also now home to Chunky’s Cinema Pub and Cowabunga’s, an activity center for children.

The spot behind the Olive Garden Italian Restaurant is less than a mile away from Werner Mazda’s 1050 Gold St. location. The company will renovate the 35,795-square-foot building for the dealership, said owner Bob Werner.

“As far as our customer base goes, it is in the same neighborhood so it doesn’t affect their ability to get their car serviced,” he said. “We think it is a little more convenient. It is a little less hectic on that side of South Willow. It’s kind of the entrance to auto row.”

The design of the dealership will be similar to that of other Mazda dealerships. Customers will be able to access the property from both Huse Road and South Willow Street.

Werner said he closed on the property about three weeks ago. Mike Simoneau of Bank of New England worked with Werner to finance the $6 million real estate acquisition, according to Colliers International.

Werner said it will take about six months to complete the renovation for both the dealership and service center.

“We are just excited to invest in that area of Manchester,” Werner said.

The building was constructed in 1998, according to city property records.
