White Birch Armory in Rochester is moving to a new location in Dover this weekend and its owner says he is going ahead with plans to build an indoor shooting range.

Sean Manning is a Purple Heart recipient who spent eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was deployed multiple times to Iraq as a reconnaissance Marine and scout-sniper.

Manning was planning to build his indoor range at the end of Quality Way in Dover, but that required a change in zoning.

Instead, he has entered into a purchase and sales agreement for eight acres of land on Industrial Park Drive just off Route 9 in Dover. The parcel is already approved for commercial recreational use.

“It is a better location. It’s farther away from homes, at least twice as far away,” Manning said Wednesday. “If things go as well as we think, we will have room to expand in the future.”

Manning plans to run gun safety workshops at the indoor range, which will also include an expanded retail shop.

Manning will appear before the city’s technical review committee for final approval next month.

While the new 20,000-square-foot facility is being built, Manning said he and his team will rent a location at 50 Crosby Road in Dover. The Rochester store will close Saturday. White Birch Armory’s retail store in Dover is expected to open next week.
