SPRINGFIELD -- A man and woman living in a car on some vacant land are facing felony charges that allege they stole a $30,000 camper.
Mark Avery, 41, and Mallory Underhill, 34, both formerly of Grantham, are charged with receiving stolen property and theft by unauthorized taking.
Avery and Underhill were indicted by the grand jury convened in Sullivan Superior Court in Newport last week. According to the police affidavits filed in the cases, the couple was being allowed by a friend to live in a car on certain property in town.
In August, police got a tip alleging the couple was living in a camper stolen from a dealership in Epsom. Police connected the camper Avery and Underhill had at George Hill Road to Country Camper in Epsom, according to the affidavit. Police had the camper towed off the property and secured, according to the affidavit.
The couple is also charged with receiving stolen property in another incident, alleging they sold stolen snowboarding gear and motorcycle gear such as helmets, chaps, jackets and bags at a pawn shop in Newport, according to a different police affidavit. The items reportedly track back to a self-storage unit in Croydon that was broken into, according to the affidavit.
Police were contacted in April about the items that Avery was registered as selling to the pawn shop, police said.
