HAMPTON -- A Massachusetts woman was charged with reckless operation after allegedly driving the wrong way and causing a head-on crash on the Route 101 East off-ramp to Interstate 95 early Friday morning.

According to state police, a preliminary investigation showed Lorraine Ward, 42, of Newburyport, Mass., was driving a 2016 Ford Escape north on I-95 and took Exit 2 toward Route 101 and the Hampton side toll, but after passing through the tolls she drove through orange traffic dividers, crossed into the opposite travel lanes, and headed west onto the Route 101 eastbound off-ramp.

State police said that after Ward drove the wrong way on the ramp, her vehicle struck a 2017 Honda CRV head-on.

The CRV, driven by John Syqowski, 55, of Sandown, had initially been traveling on Route 101 East and exited properly onto the off-ramp for I-95 and the toll plaza, state police said.

Ward wasn’t hurt in the crash. Syqowski was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ward was charged with reckless operation and is scheduled to appear in Seabrook Circuit Court on Jan. 10.

The Route 101 East off-ramp was closed for about an hour. Traffic was diverted to Exit 13 on Route 101.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Hampton police and fire departments, Dave’s Garage and Dana’s Towing.
