PORTSMOUTH — A city man faces three counts of animal cruelty after video surfaced of him allegedly abusing a dog as he walked along Anne Avenue, police said.

David Dantino, 26, is accused of kicking a 3-year-old Australian Cattle Dog named Knox. The video shows Dantino lifting the dog off the ground by its leash and jerking the leash, causing Knox’s head to snap sideways, police said.

Police began investigating Dec. 31, according to a news release.

The incident allegedly happened as Dantino walked Knox along Anne Avenue. Dantino lives on Anne Avenue but police say he does not own Knox.

Knox is in the custody of the woman who owns him and she does not face any charges, police said.

Dantino was released on personal recognizance bail and is to be arraigned March 4 in Portsmouth circuit court.

Portsmouth police ask anyone who witnesses or suspects animal abuse to call law enforcement. .
