HOOKSETT — Police are asking the public to identify a man they say shoplifted $197 worth of dietary supplements from the Hannaford Supermarket on Bicentennial Drive last Thursday.

About 7:45 p.m., loss prevention employees who were watching in-store security cameras spotted the man take several boxes of vitamins and other supplements off store shelves and hide them in his coat, police said.

Confronted, the man bolted from the store with the merchandise, according to police.

“They have shoplifters all of the time, but this is the first one where the guy took off in a sprint,” said Officer Erin Minihan. “They usually cooperate with the store employees and follow them into the loss prevention office.”

The man ran across the parking lot toward the New Hampshire Liquor Store in the same shopping plaza to get into the passenger seat of an unidentified car that departed in the direction of Hooksett Road, police believe.

Minihan said the specific items taken in this incident also were out of the ordinary.

“This is the first time I’ve seen someone steal supplements,” she said. “If it’s a grocery store, it’s almost always food.”
