$59 million Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health expansion

MANCHESTER — A $59 million clinic expansion will bring more services closer to people’s homes, the head of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health said at a groundbreaking Tuesday.

“We know that health care is changing rapidly enough that we have to be able to accommodate those cases that can be performed in an outpatient center and send patients home — surgeries that historically we have admitted patients to the hospital for, (over) two or three days,” Joanne Conroy, CEO and president of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, told attendees under a white tent.

The 91,000-square-foot expansion, off Edward J. Roy Drive, will include an ambulatory surgery center with six modern operating rooms to manage medical visits of up to 23 hours. The ambulatory center will employ close to 100 people, a mix of new and current workers, Conroy said afterward.

The expansion, expected to be completed in fall 2020, is being funded through the health system’s operating budget, as well as borrowing, Conroy said. The project will combine orthopedics, podiatry, and spine and pain management into one location.

The new space includes expanded lab and imaging services, as well as operating rooms dedicated for pediatric patients. A new cafe and outdoor seating also are planned.

The expansion will allow patients “to spend most of their recovery in the place that they feel most comfortable — in their own home,” Conroy said.
