HAMPTON — Sunday morning masses were canceled at a Hampton church, after “concerning” items were found left on an altar.
Hampton Deputy Police Chief David Hobbs said in a news release Sunday morning services were canceled out of an abundance of caution, but police determined there was no threat to the public.
According to Hobbs, the items were discovered about 7 a.m. at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal church on Lafayette Road.
Police did not specify what the items were or why they caused concern in those that found them, but stressed there was “nothing illegal” about them.
“There was nothing illegal about these items however it did give cause for concern for the safety of the community,” Hobbs said in a statement.
Attempts to reach Hobbs and officials at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal church Sunday for additional comment on what the suspicious items were left at the church were unsuccessful.
Police identified the person who left the items, and said that individual did so to return them to a family member.
Police said no charges are pending.
A message on the church’s Facebook page said a Mass would be held Sunday night at 7 p.m. as scheduled.
