NASHUA — The Gate City has been named one of the nation’s top 100 places to live by Money Magazine — an honor it seems to know all too well.

Money Magazine announced its list of the top 100 best places to live in the country on Monday, which includes communities with a population of more than 50,000 residents. This year, Nashua is the only city in New Hampshire to make the list, this time in 71st place.

“I think obviously it is flattering and exciting. It is always nice to receive validation that we are doing the right things and we are making good decisions,” said Tim Cummings, director of economic development for the city.

Taking the top spot on the list is Clarksville, Tenn. The communities closest to Nashua to make the list include Somerville, Mass., Brighton, Mass., and Portland, Maine.

“It is absolutely nice to be held in high regards. We often look toward Portland and Somerville as entities that we watch what they are doing. It is nice to see were are in good company,” said Cummings.

According to the rankings, different data points were used to determine the list of the best places to live in America, including factors such as the economy, cost of living, diversity, education, housing, ease of living, amenities and health and safety. With a population of nearly 89,800, Nashua’s median household income is about $74,328, and its median home price is about $264,400, states the ranking, adding Nashua has a projected job growth of about 3.2 percent.

“Nashua is a community that is full of people who are amazing volunteers that give back and want to be here — they are a part of the fabric of Nashua,” said Sarah Marchant, community development director for the city. “We have a thriving downtown, a thriving business community and a major corridor with a unique downtown and also big-box retail.”

Marchant said Nashua has great jobs and offers a tremendous place to live, work, play and raise a family.

“It is a place where you can get a little bit of everything,” she said on Tuesday.

Cummings agreed, saying the city works hard to make improvements and continuously aspire to be better.

“We are going to continue to work hard with our priorities to make sure we provide the best services possible for the city,” added Cummings.

In 2016, Money Magazine also ranked Nashua as one of its best places to live in America. The city also made the rankings in 1987 and 1997.

“The average American will move nearly a dozen times during his or her lifetime. Our Best Places to Live franchise give individuals and families the guidance they need to make informed decisions about where they will have the best living experience across the country,” Shaina Mishkin, a writer at MONEY.com who oversaw the project, said in a statement.

According to a news release, the greatest weight used in the methodology to select communities was given to economic factors such as housing, diversity, cost of living, health and safety; more than 160,000 data points were collected to narrow the list.

Money Magazine also previously named Nashua one of the best places to live in New Hampshire in a different ranking list. In separate rankings, the city has been included in Money Magazine’s best places to live for families on at least seven occasions. Manchester was previously ranked as the best small city in the East by Money Magazine in 1998, and the sixth-best city nationwide in 1997. Portsmouth also made the list in 1997.
