The annual Festival of Fireworks in Jeffrey attracts hundreds of people each year. Selectmen voted to ban alcohol at beaches and the festival.

JAFFREY — Selectmen voted recently to ban alcohol at all town beaches as well as at events like the annual Festival of Fireworks.

The Jaffrey Select Board voted Tuesday to update the town’s alcohol ordinance to include public and some private property to the areas where people are not allowed to drink alcohol.

“Apparently there’s been some difficulty at Sandy Beach over the summer,” Chair Franklin Sterling said.

Alcohol consumption is generally banned on town property, but now town-owned beaches are being added to the list. The amended ordinance goes further and will also apply to some private beaches in town where there is public access, according to Sterling.

The ordinance requires private beaches with areas open to the public, like Sandy Beach, to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the town to adhere to the alcohol ban.

Town Manager Jon Frederick said that the memorandum of understanding requirement will extend to any property that regularly requires police assistance.

“I’m thinking in particular of the Festival of Fireworks held at the airport over the summer,” Sterling said.
