Assange, Manning believed leaks would injure U.S.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning had reason to believe that leaking U.S. military reports “would cause injury” to the country, federal prosecutors alleged in a newly unsealed court filing on Monday. In the affidavit submitted to federal court in Alexandria, Va., prosecutors said U.S. military reports from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq included information about the “identity and significance of local supporters of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan.”
Warren wants drilling banned on federal lands
Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren said on Monday she would ban all fossil fuel extraction on federal land and in coastal waters, setting herself apart from a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls who have made climate change a central campaign issue but have yet to outline specific policies. Warren said in a post on Medium that she would sign an executive order on her first day in office for a “total moratorium on all new fossil fuel leases including for drilling offshore and on public lands.”
Man accused of throwing boy at mall first sought to kill adult
The man accused of seriously injuring a 5-year-old boy by throwing him from a balcony at Minnesota’s Mall of America last week told investigators he had initially intended to kill an adult, but it did not “work out,” prosecutors said on Monday. Emmanuel Aranda, who police said has a history of mental issues and arrests on relatively minor charges, went to the mall last Thursday and left without following through on his plan, the Hennepin County Attorney’s office said.
Hate crime charges lodged in Louisiana church burnings
Three additional charges were lodged against the son of a sheriff’s deputy accused of burning down three predominately black churches in southern Louisiana in the past few weeks. A Louisiana judge added three federal hate crime charges against Holden Matthews, 21, and denied him bond on Monday, multiple media accounts reported, including CBS News.
