CANTERBURY — A head-on collision left two dead and another seriously injured Friday afternoon on Route 106.
Police say a pickup truck traveling in the northbound lane of 106 veered into an oncoming lane and collided with a flatbed truck.
The victims, who have not been identified, were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third was transported to an unspecified hospital.
A Laconia resident who wished to remain anonymous said he was traveling toward Concord in the southbound lane when traffic suddenly came to a halt and he saw smoke rising approximately three cars ahead of him.
“That’s when people ran over and started to help,” he said. “I didn’t see anyone dead, but a passenger in the northbound vehicle was definitely in distress with the front end pinning his legs.”
The driver said that several others who were near the scene of the accident also pulled over and tried to help by working to extract the trapped individuals until first responders arrived.
“The people who pulled over all did great with the tools available, like a wrecking bar to break out windows and try to pry the doors open,” he said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
