Driver strikes tractor trailer on Route 101, escapes unharmed

The unidentified driver of this sedan escaped injury after his car struck the front of a tractor-trailer unit on Route 101 in Amherst during rush hour Friday afternoon.

AMHERST — Local police said a driver wearing a seat belt managed to escape without serious injury after his car struck a tractor-trailer and rolled over onto its roof.

Local police and firefighters responded just after 5:30 p.m. to a report that the driver of a sedan traveling east on Route 101 had collided with the tractor-trailer.

Officials said the driver initially tried to pass the truck but ran out of room and got back into his lane, striking the front of the tractor trailer.

After the car rolled over, the airbags deployed and the driver of the sedan declined medical treatment, officials said.

The road at rush hour was closed for about an hour, which backed up westbound traffic significantly, officials said.

Those driving eastbound were able to get off Route 101 onto the exit into Milford.

Amherst police are investigating the accident, officials said.
