MANCHESTER — A 40-year-old Manchester man jumped to his death from an overpass into eastbound traffic on Interstate 293 on Monday morning.
State Police said Richard Newton climbed over the chain link fence on the South Willow Street overpass and jumped into oncoming traffic just after 10 a.m., landing in the eastbound lanes, where he was struck by two vehicles.
A white pickup truck that Newton appeared to have landed on was left with a large dent in its roof and a partially collapsed windshield. No drivers were injured, officials said.
State Police said the driver of the F-250 Ford pickup was Brad Desrochers, 38, of Fitchburg. Mass. Newton was also struck by a red Ford Eco Sport driven by Cheryl Fuentes, 49, of Derry.
Newton was pronounced dead at the scene by the Medical Examiner’s office.
Traffic backed up on the eastbound span of I-293/Route 101 as state and local police responded to the call.
New Hampshire State Police blocked the eastbound span of the highway and routed traffic through the exit and back onto the highway.
Crisis Intervention Team counselors responded to talk to witnesses and first responders, police said.
Police opened one lane of the highway to traffic around noon.
