Berlin fire and ambulance personnel and a Fish and Game conservation officer responded to a report of a crash on the Holt’s Revenge trail shortly before 2 p.m. and found Gerard Melillo, 59, of Carteret, N.J., badly hurt, according to a news release.

Investigators learned that Melillo had failed to negotiate a curve and crashed his vehicle into a ditch alongside the trail. Members of his riding party came to his assistance and called 911.

Melillo was taken from the scene by truck to a waiting ambulance near the park entrance. He was taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital.

Fish and Game said speed was considered the primary cause of the crash.

Melillo was wearing a helmet and a seatbelt.
