OSSIPEE — No one was injured, but two homes in the Ossipee Mountain Estates Co-op were destroyed Friday afternoon when an explosion and fire at 3 Puritan Lane spread to an adjoining residence on Mountainview Road.

Just before 3 p.m., residents in both houses heard the explosion, saw the fire and called 911, said Carl Huddleston, the chief of the West Ossipee Fire Department.

Huddleston oversaw firefighters from 20 agencies in New Hampshire and nearby Maine, who by 6 p.m. had knocked down both fires and were dousing remaining hot spots in the structures.

The fires are under investigation by the New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s office.

When asked if the fires were suspicious, Huddleston replied, “not at all.”

Ossipee Fire 2

A scene from the Friday fires that destroyed two residences in the Ossipee Mountain Estates Co-Op in West Ossipee. Not believed to be suspicious in origin, the fire began with an explosion at 3 Puritan Lane and later spread to the adjacent house on Mountainview Road. Some 100 firefighters from 20 agencies in both New Hampshire and Maine responded. No injuries were reported.

He said the biggest challenge in fighting the fires was having enough personnel, while another concern was Friday’s warm, somewhat humid weather that he feared would take a toll on the firefighters in their heavy turnout gear.
