Train hits car that got too close in Rochester

A train hit a vehicle after the driver stopped past the stop lines on Summer Street in Rochester on Monday.

ROCHESTER — Police in Rochester are reminding people that stop lines on the roadways are designed to protect them from being hit by trains.

Emergency crews responded to a crash involving a train and a 2013 Mercedes S-Class car on Summer Street Monday afternoon. Police say they transported driver Basel Alkurabi, 60, of Rochester, to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers at the scene discovered Alkurabi’s car was past the white stop line, finding that as the train approached the crossing it hit the front passenger side of the vehicle.

The Mercedes was towed from the scene and Alkurabi was issued a summons, police said.
