SANDOWN — A 17-year-old male suffered serious injuries Friday when he lost control of his all-terrain vehicle that then crashed head-on into a tree, Fish and Game officials said.
Conservation officers responded about 4 p.m. to the call of an accident on the Rockingham Recreational Trail in Sandown.
Witnesses said the ATV rider struck a log on the trail, which caused him to lose control.
A pair of riding companions with the accident victim quickly placed a call to emergency personnel.
The victim, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was taken by medical helicopter to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for treatment of his injuries, Fish and Game officials said.
Operator inattention appears to be the primary cause of the crash, officials said, following a preliminary investigation at the scene.
Sandown police and fire officials assisted at the scene, officials said.
Fish and Game officials said the accident is a reminder that riders need to pay attention to their surroundings and ride within their limits.
