BEDFORD — Maggie Berleth, a sixth-grade student at McKelvie Middle School in Bedford, recently represented New Hampshire in the VFW Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition, winning at the local, district and state levels before advancing to the national level where she finished 13th.

Students were required to write an essay on “Why I honor the American Flag.”

She received $250 at the district level, $1,000 at the state level and $1,000 at the national level.

The middle-school student who wins first place at nationals receives a check for $5,000.

Nearly 110,000 middle school students compete from all 50 states and the territories where VFW posts are located.
