The Seacoast vocal chamber chorus Amare Cantare will perform three winter concerts on the Seacoast in the next week.
Concerts will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth; 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Church, 150 Central Ave., Dover, and 7:30 p.m. Wednesdsay, Dec. 12, at Christ Church, 43 Pine St., Exeter.
Amare Cantare’s program will feature a variety of sacred works, including selections from Josef Rheinberger’s “Advent” motets and pieces by Josquin des Prez, Cecilia McDowall, Sally Herman and Juan Garcia de Salazar. The ensemble also will perform a set of spirituals, including two Christmas spirituals arranged by David Blackwell and Rosephanye Powell’s “Be Glad in the Lord.” At the conclusion of the program the audience will be invited to sing beloved seasonal carols along with the choir.
“This program will give the audience a chance to bask in the pure joy of listening to beautiful unaccompanied voices,” said Catherine Beller-McKenna, music director of Amare Cantare. “Two highlights are the rich harmonies of the Rheinberger motets and David Blackwell’s fresh and sophisticated arrangements of two Christmas spirituals ‘Mary Had a Baby’ and ‘The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy.’”
Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 in advance. Student and senior tickets are $10-$12.
