Celia Thaxter, a famed 19th-century poet whose artist community included Impressionist painter Childe Hassam and fellow poet John Greenleaf Whittier, was known for her hospitality and garden on Appledore Island.

The garden has been reconstructed and is maintained by the Shoals Marine Laboratory. It is accessible to the public during guided garden tours. In 2017, the piazza (wooden porch) that once connected the cottage to her garden was rebuilt.

Some of Thaxter’s original plants still bloom in the garden, including snowdrops, the hops vine, and daylilies, according to the website www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org.

August tours are still available; a $100 fee includes round-trip boat transportation, a guided garden tour and catered gourmet lunch. For information call 603- 862-5346 or email shoals.lab@unh.edu
