In the little town of Bethlehem, the stillness is being broken of late by one motel resident whose IQ is apparently just high enough to correctly spell four-letter words.
The fellow has hung a big sign in front of his unit. It contains his crude opinion of President Joe Biden. The elderly motel owner wants the sign removed but the renter says he has a right to “free speech.”
That’s true and we are sure Jefferson, Adams, and others whose names grace the surrounding Presidential Range are just tickled pink that their work is being recognized in such fashion.
But the landlord also has rights. He has the right to evict this tenant if the man is violating his lease. No doubt fellow townspeople would help with the bill to that end.
Meanwhile, upon reflection, we have modified our opinion of Ralph Waldo Emerson. This sign-painter fits the bill for the poet’s line that, “The God who made New Hampshire taunted the lofty land with little men.”
