The Singer family business has come a long way from a Manchester used car location that the late Irving Singer used to say was close to the Valley Street jail and the cemetery. What would he make now of the company that his children, and now grandchildren, have built?

Last week saw the consolidation of the Merchants transportation leasing company (one of the largest in the U.S. these days) into one spacious and high-tech site in a Hooksett office building at Exit 10 on Interstate 93. Merchants Fleet had spread out over five buildings, including the Merchants Motors site on Hooksett Road.

Walking through the new Fleet center, one can sense the energy and pride that its hundreds of employees share with the Singer ownership. Fleet now works with companies like Amazon and the day isn’t far off when Fleet will be leasing driver-less vehicles to businesses. Also not far off: drone delivery.

Gov. Chris Sununu, looking the place over, said it was another thing New Hampshire can brag about. It is that, for sure.
