To the Editor: I agree with House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and hope she keeps her cool re: impeachment of President Trump.
Two years ago, I think I would have given my right arm to see Trump impeached by the House, removed from office by the Senate and thrown into general population behind bars in New York’s Attica State Prison.
I would still love to see that happen, but removal from office is not going to happen without bipartisan support in the Senate. Impeachment proceedings would be nothing more than a circus sideshow. I believe Republicans at this point, would love the distractions of impeachment.
If the House does not move to impeach, Republicans will go on the offense. They will be “investigating the investigators.” They will keep pounding Mueller. They will hound progressives. They will distract from issue debate. They will continue suppressing the vote.
As Speaker Pelosi has intimated over and over, we need to run on the issues. We need to ignore Trump and “Trumper” distractions and hammer at the issues.
At every opening, point out Republicans had two full years of absolute legislative control! Affordable health care reform? Immigration reform? Drug companies? Only major “legislative” accomplishment was huge tax cut for Trump and cronies. Now! Sticking our lone noses into Venezuela militarily? I would love to see hundreds of thousands of billboards across the country displaying star spangled elephant “2 year accomplishment — Tax cut for whom?”
I am no longer a “progressive Democrat.” I am a centrist Democrat. I am a centrist American voter!
