To the Editor: Executive Councilor Prescott has asked that the council reconsider the nomination of Attorney General MacDonald for the position of chief justice.

He claims that the decision to reject the nomination was political.

Another executive councilor raises questions about the attorney general’s strongly expressed views on certain long-established policies.

I am opposed to Mr. MacDonald’s appointment not based on politics nor based on policy.

My objection is that he has absolutely no judicial experience.

To appoint as chief justice someone with no substantive or procedural judicial experience is irresponsible.

If the governor chooses to nominate to the court someone with no experience it is his prerogative. But to nominate such a person to head the judicial branch of the state is disrespectful of the third branch of government.
