Highway Dept. kudos

To the Editor: Anyone visiting the City of Manchester website and directing their attention to the Department of Public Works, Highway Division, will be overwhelmed by the responsibilities listed ... trash and snow removal, recycling, signals, signs and striping, graffiti removal, maintenance of all roads — repaving, potholes, report a problem. The website itself provides a sea of information for citizens, including a current condition map for all city streets and an updated maintenance plan for those streets. This is a monster responsibility, requiring great care and attention to execute successfully, season to season, in a thoughtful and professional manner.

On occasion, throughout the year, I have gone to the “Report a Problem” section of the site, having noticed a pothole or some potentially dangerous situation around town. Without fail, I have noticed corrective action taken, typically within a week of my notice. The seasonal demands of living in New England present unique challenges to any maintenance efforts, and such responsiveness goes a long way toward mitigating any more serious challenges.

This summer, I have been impressed with the extraordinary road repair efforts around this town. In a short summer season, the speed with which miles of roads have been repaired, repaved and professionally striped, without major inconvenience to the populace, has been absolutely remarkable and greatly appreciated. The department deserves much credit for their continuing efforts to maintain the infrastructure of Manchester.
