Just asking questions
To the Editor: I was asking myself some questions after reading the article “Now Hiring” in the Sept. 29 edition of the Sunday News.
Do these glowing statistics account for the capable potential job holders who find collecting welfare easier than looking for and working at a job? Do they account for the people who collect disability benefits yet still continue to work for cash off the books? Do they account for the people who claim disability just because they don’t want to work?
I’m not condemning the entire system. There are many hard-working people who need assistance and many people who truly need disability assistance. There are also many who are playing the system. When publishing these sorts of “feel good” stories, please provide statistics from both sides. Is there an available workforce out there? Yes, certainly. Can they be encouraged to work? Apparently not, when a viable option is not working and receiving as much income.
Just asking. Think about it.
