To the Editor: I read the article in the Union Leader titled “China, not Russia, the greater threat,” by Pat Buchanan on Aug. 14, 2019.

I wish to express my personal view that China will spare no effort to take advantage of trade with the international community to consolidate its authoritarian regime.

In the meantime, China is also challenging the world in the Indo-Pacific and beyond by eroding the sovereignty of neighboring countries in the South China Sea, even under the threat of military coercion.

Taiwan is a robust democracy in Asia.

Like Hong Kong, the people of Taiwan flatly reject China’s proposal of “One Country, Two Systems”, a proven failed model that runs against the very grain of democracy.

We are pleased to stand together with the U.S. and other like-minded countries to ensure a free and open world, both economically and politically. Taiwan provides a solid model for success when democracy prevails.

Taiwan shares the same motto as “Live Free or Die” with New Hampshire.
