Pride has waned

To the Editor: I used to be a proud and patriotic American. I enlisted in the Army after college, went through OCS, and volunteered for service in Vietnam in 1968. Upon return, I served the requisite amount of time in the Reserves, and received an honorable discharge.

My patriotism is undiminished, but my pride in country has waned.

Our leader coddles tyrants, hurts our farmers with tariffs, imprisons immigrants and insults our allies. I fear he is also prone to racism given recent tweets.

I hoped we would do better, but the Republicans in Congress tolerate, perhaps even encourage his behavior, so our best hope is 2020.

Voters repudiated him in 2018 and the House changed hands.

Let’s hope for more of the same.
