To the Editor: The Bedford school board has recently been discussing the use of helmets for women’s lacrosse. I fully support Dr. Kassler and his efforts to make helmet use mandatory for Bedford school lacrosse teams.
I understand that many parents are concerned about the “Gladiator Effect,” increasing aggressiveness if more protection is used. While data is limited, what is available does not support this result.
What I can tell you is that in the office we are seeing more injuries and concussions in general, not fewer. While this may be due to greater recognition from coaches, parents and players of these injuries, they clearly are already occurring.
No one used to wear seat belts, no one used to wear bicycle helmets, but we all recognize that these reduce morbidity and mortality.
People are naturally resistant to change. When it is your daughter who has the head injury or concussion, will you think differently?
