There’s still time
To the Editor: With a motto like “Live Free or Die,” our state should never pass a bill which makes it difficult to vote .
But last July, Gov. Chris Sununu signed into law HB 1264, a bill which was to become effective this July. Sold as an effort to stop voter fraud, it is a thinly veiled voter suppression act which would make it difficult to vote for resident students, military personnel and people employed in New Hampshire for a fixed term.
In America, citizens over 18 are eligible to vote and should be encouraged to do so. Our Constitution protects students’ right to vote where they live. Our systems should have the aim of “getting out the vote,” not discouraging anyone from being able to cast a ballot.
Two bills to correct this problem are under consideration . So, we still have time to enable all our voters to participate in November’s elections! Let’s amend HB 1264 and ensure that all New Hampshire residents are encouraged to vote.
