To the Editor: Mr. Trump’s penchant for making false and misleading statements and his history of setting off firestorms with controversial remarks that he walks back later has undermined his credibility with world leaders and the American people alike.
This creates serious ramifications for the country’s business leaders and farmers, but it is potentially disastrous in foreign policy as the escalating tensions with Iran demonstrate. One wonders about the motives behind the provocations such as withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, harsh economic sanctions and incendiary rhetoric. Decisions about military intervention should be based on reliable information and trustworthy sources, not the need to justify arms sales to Saudi Arabia, distract from political pressure, or look tough.
With great power comes great responsibility. Presidential words and actions matter. Mr. President, the potential lives lost due to U.S. involvement in a war in the Middle East could not be walked back.
