Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy has been suspended for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the NHL announced Tuesday.

He was disciplined for an illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Josh Anderson during Game 6 of the teams' second-round series on Monday.

Boston hosts the opener of the conference finals Thursday at 8 p.m. against Carolina.

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced the McAvoy decision just before 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. McAvoy had a hearing with the department earlier in the day.

The incident occurred at 19:37 of the second period. McAvoy was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head during the game, and Anderson was later able to return.

McAvoy has appeared in all 13 of his team's playoff games. He is tied for second in the NHL with a postseason plus/minus rating of +8.

He has scored one goal to go with five assists.
