The New England College men's baseball team will have to win two consecutive Super Regional games on Saturday to continue its first-ever NCAA Division III tournament run.
No. 23 UMass Boston put the Pilgrims against the wall by earning a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of the best-of-three Super Regional series Friday at Monan Park in Boston.
Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at noon and, if necessary, Game 3 will be played at 3 p.m.
Ryan McCormick clinched the Beacons their Game 1 win with his one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning that scored teammates Danny Brown, a junior from Hudson, and Eddie Riley. Brown reached on a fielder's choice and Riley drew a walk to reach base.
The Pilgrims (28-17) stranded senior Evan Delaney at first base in the ninth frame.
UMass Boston (34-11) led, 3-2, after two innings before the Pilgrims, who are coached by Salem's Terry Doyle, plated two runs in the fifth frame. Anderson Jimenez scored on a throwing error and Nick Powers drove in Connor Morin with his bases-loaded infield single.
NEC opened the game's scoring in the first inning via a Jimenez RBI sacrifice fly and a Luis Atiles RBI infield single.
The Beacons brought home three runs in the second frame to take a 3-2 lead.
